Ripping

Some tricks to resolve issues when ripping DVDs for my media server.

Audio delay

Sometimes, DVDs appear to rip fine in Handbrake, but the resulting file has audio delayed. Using ffmpeg can help:

ffmpeg -i inputfile.mp4 -itsoffset <SECONDS> -i inputfile.mp4 -map 1:0 -map 0:1 outputfile.mp4

Replace <SECONDS> with the desired delay:

  • Positive value if video is ahead of audio
  • Negative value if audio is ahead of video

It can also be worthwhile when ripping to try and split the file on certain chapters. The delay in one chapter will affect all following chapters.
